Coloring Outside the Lines: Helping Kids Explore Race through Art

September 25 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

$50

Calling all art educators, classroom teachers, parents, librarians, and caregivers!

Ever wonder if kids can really learn about race through art? Interested in EmbraceRace’s Drawing Difference curriculum but unsure how to guide discussions on race with kids?

EmbraceRace’s Drawing Differences art lessons were designed to help kids (and their adults) draw across color lines and, importantly, to talk about what they’re seeing and drawing. The lessons include videos, activities, conversation tips, drawing guides, and more – all freely available to you. The lessons are geared for 3rd to 5th graders but can be easily adapted for younger and older kids. Some of you have asked for additional support in using the lessons, particularly in having conversations about race with kids. We are responding with a new opportunity: the EmbraceRace Drawing Differences Workshop!

Join us for a two-hour training workshop on our Drawing Differences art curriculum on Wednesday, September 25, 6:30-8:30 pm EST / 3:30-5:30 pm PT! We will review the Drawing Differences curriculum, learn when, what, and how kids learn about race, do some conversational role-playing about race, and brainstorm how to use the curriculum in our localized contexts.

EmbraceRacers Melissa Giraud, Andrea Huang, and Christina Rucinski will lead the workshop. We’re excited to announce that antiracist art educator Paula Liz, a Drawing Differences curriculum collaborator and one of the founders of Anti-Racist Art Teachers, will join us for a Q&A.

Paula Liz has over a decade of teaching experience at public, independent, and charter schools. In 2022, she was named Maryland Art Educator of the Year. Paula Liz is the current Youth and Preservice Program Manager for the National Art Education Association.

Thanks to our generous donors, we are able to offer this workshop for $100. However, to help ensure that the cost is not prohibitive, sliding-scale payment options range from $50 to $150. If the cost is prohibitive, please reach out to us for scholarship opportunities at earlychildhood@embracerace.org. Please know that registration is non-refundable and non-transferable.
