Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

The observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day began in 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed it into law. In the words of Coretta Scott King, the holiday “celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America.”

As we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy of non-violence and racial equality, we are reminded that reflection is not enough. Our daily work includes listening, learning, and challenging ideas to create the hope and healing Dr. King dedicated his life to.

We are also reminded that Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a day of service. We can all be beacons of light, and we encourage everyone to reflect on how they can be involved. The list of ideas to celebrate the holiday and learn more about Dr. King continues to grow year after year. We’ve included some links to books, activities, and more resources for you to visit. And we would love to hear from you! Do you have a service project you do as a family? What are ways you honor Dr. King’s legacy in your home?

For events taking place in honor of the holiday, please check out our calendar of events.
