Culturally Fluent Families

Culturally Fluent Families is an educational program and community developed by Valarie Chavis to support non-Black adoptive parents raising Black children in transracial adoptive families. Through a six-step Model of Fluency, parents are guided to examine their understanding of race in America, build culturally affirming communities for their children, and develop the tools and relationships needed to raise children with a strong, healthy racial identity. The program has expanded to support transracial adoption across a broader range of backgrounds and family structures.
