A Kids Book About Racism
Description
Yes, this really is a kid’s book about racism. Inside, you’ll find a clear description of what racism is, how it makes people feel when they experience it, and how to spot it when it happens. This is one conversation that’s never too early to start, and this book was written to be an introduction for kids on the topic. *This book is best read together, grownup and kid.

Racism can be a sensitive and complex topic to talk about with adults–is it possible to easily explain it to young children? According to A Kids Book About Racism, yes, it is possible. I was skeptical as I read some mixed reviews on this book. However, I do agree with most readers that this children’s book does a nice job of introducing the basic concepts of racism to children in the most simple and friendly way. I would recommend that you consider this book if you are a parent or educator struggling with the idea of talking to a young child about racism and are interested in having meaningful discussions.
The author, Jelani Memory, does a good job of using simple words and phrases to illustrate to kids what racism is and how it affects people. I feel the book does a nice job of helping kids learn to empathize with people who experience racism and encouraging them to speak up for others who may not be able to when it happens. The book also does a nice job of highlighting the beauty of diversity, encouraging young children to learn to embrace differences and simply the importance of being kind to one another. It gets a gold star from me!
