Let’s Talk
Teens write about group home staff, caseworkers, social workers, teachers and foster parents who have helped them (and some who haven’t). Foster youth expect much from staff, including emotional support and access to services. Yet, because teens often have a history of poor relationships with authority figures, communication between teens and staff can be affected by miscommunication, mistrust, and even hostility. Some writers have been ignored or misunderstood, while others have been saved by attentive and sensitive interactions. The stories show how communication can be improved on both sides, and provide insight into what kinds of approaches and styles can lead to strong and satisfying bonds with foster teens. These stories are ideal for use in staff training and helping teens to better understand what staff can (and can not) do for them.
