Meet Riley Bear, an adorable cub who has always been very brave. Now Riley is learning new and different ways to be brave, and he doesn’t have to learn them alone. He has the help of safe and caring critters and friends to ensure that Riley can continue to be brave in a safe and loving way.

This wonderful, engaging, and educational children’s book is geared toward children who have big feelings and have experienced difficult things in their past. The author did an excellent job of creating a book that validates some of the ways our children demonstrate their “bravery” while also offering them concrete and literal examples of how they can work on continuing to be brave in a more safe and positive way, with the support of safe and loving caregivers.

The illustrations in Riley the Brave are bright and engaging. The book uses different fonts and colors to emphasize and draw attention to certain words. This would be an excellent book for educators, counselors, parents and caregivers, and anyone supporting our children with big feelings and hard pasts. The book includes an afterword for grown-ups that does a very nice job of briefly describing how trauma can impact children’s brains and how we, as caregivers, can create safety and offer support.

Riley the Brave was a wonderful, educational, and engaging book for both children and the grown-ups who care for them.
